POKLJUKA GORGE

A fantastic gorge formed by water flowing from the Pokljuka glaciers.

Suggestion: To arrive to a start point to enter Pokljuka gorge, you can use a bike or go by car or taxi. Inside the gorge, it is impossible to go by bike.

Caution: At some points’ path can be pretty difficult. A helmet is recommended (specially after rain) due to a falling rocks.

To the start point
If you are brave enough to go by bike, otherwise we suggest you to take a taxi or use your car to arrive to Pokljuka gorge entrance. You will drive through the quiet village of Krnica and across the meadow to the end of the road, where there is a small parking lot.
The beginning
At the beginning of your journey, it will take some time of walking in a forest path before arriving to a hidden valley.
Hidden valley
On the left, there will be a hidden valley. If you are lucky enough, you will be surprised by a waterfall (only on rainy days).
Cave "Pokljuška luknja"
The path will guide you up the hill to the interesting “Pokluška luknja” (a large semi-open cave). Soon you will reach the wall, where the signs direct us to the left towards the Galleries, which are the most fascinating part of the gorge. Then we return to the crossroads and continue towards Pokljuka Hole, which has two entrances and three windows. We go through the hole above it and end our journey here.
Fern forest
Or you can continue to the high natural bridge and wooden gallery from 1930. Now you climb along the wooden steps through narrow steps, and you will come to upper part of the gorge. Here you will walk through nice fern forest. We recommend the use of a good map or hiking navigation, as the GPS tracks of the described route are partly off-road.
Back where you started
We continue past all the clearings and soon reach Figovec’s homestead. We stick to the macadam road we walk on, as it takes us to the starting point after less than 30 minutes of walking.

Walking time: ~ 1h 30 min (from the parking lot) | in case of bike ~ 2h
Distance: ~ 4 km | in case of bike ~ 8 km
